Queer Qumbia Night at MOTHER!
Southern Fried Queer Pride and La Choloteca are teaming up to bring Queer Qumbia night to MOTHER! As SFQP Executive Director Taylor Alxndr notes, “We've always wanted to collaborate with La Choloteca! A lot of our events center marginalized communities, and there's a lack of queer Latinx spaces in the city. This is how this event came to be!” SFQP is a queer and trans arts and advocacy organization based in Atlanta. Through their two festivals and over 40 events throughout the year, SFQP’s programming creates spaces to uplift Southern queer voices and culture. Now in their fifth year, SFQP plans to announce their 2019 festival programming in the coming weeks!
As Sunni Johnson writes in an article on La Choloteca for Q Magazine, “Providing a meeting ground for Latinx creatives, the founders [of La Choloteca] intentionally created a space for their cultures and tastes. Spinning everything from cumbia, salsa, reggaeton and electro Spanish pop, the musical foundation alone stands out from any other party unit in the ATL perimeter, an aspect that is personally liberating for those involved.”
The night will feature DJ sets by Esme and La Superior, as well as original cocktails made with Flor de Caña Rum. Doors and music will start at 10PM. Entry is free until 11PM and $5 after. Learn more by clicking here and make sure to not miss out on this night of Latinx beats to move your feet!
Earlier that day, SFQP and Latinos in the Deep South will host JUNTXS - a Latinx community discussion. There will be food provided, drinks, music and lots of conversation! Doors for the community discussion event open at 6PM with conversation starting promptly at 7.
